Recent Kauai Sands Review: "We paid very little to stay at this hotel. We stayed many years ago and at that time there was a restaurant that was nice to have onsite. The restaurant is no longer there, but a large condo complex with a restaurant is next door and within walking distance. It has it's own beach with a few lounge chairs and lighting at night. There is a very clean pool, although the pool closes early in the evening. The grounds are clean and neatly trimmed. The room was large with a nice size balcony with chairs and tables over looking the pool and gardens. The decor of the room is dated and dark, but very clean. The bathroom was very clean, no mold or sand. There was a refridgerator and air conditioning. It is not a resort setting, more like a small quiet, private setting. The cost was amazing! I wish they had a place like this on Oahu. I will return again and probably just visit the large resorts for lunch or a drink. It's nice to stay at an affordable place for rest and be able to tour all day and know you are returning to a clean comfortable bed."

A short guide to Wailua

Located on the south end of the famed Coconut Coast, Wailua sits at the mouth of Hawaii’s longest navigable river. This area was once favored by royalty and is dotted with sacred Hawaiian sites. Today, kayakers and adventurers use the town as a base to explore the Wailua River, Wailua Falls, and the 19th-century plantation village of Kapaa.

Recreation

In addition to two outdoor pools and sundecks, Kauai Sands Hotel provides a small fitness room with a treadmill, stationary bike, and skiing machine. Though the adjacent Waipouli Beach is considered unsafe for all but strong swimmers and surfers, it is a lovely walking or jogging beach.

Wailua Municipal Golf Course is a 10-minute drive south of the hotel. The Wailua River, a five-minute drive south, is the longest navigable river in Hawaii, and boat and kayak trips up the river are popular.

Hotel was great and sat right on the beach. Staff was quite friendly. Room was clean and nice. Only complaint is that the bathroom counter was so tiny . But overall quite nice.

Got to the hotel at 9pm, left in the morning at 8am so it was a super short stay. Here's my two cents: Friendly staff. Clean, sufficient room. The mattress isn't anywhere top of the line but since I like firm beds, it was really comfortable for me. A small fridge was a plus...Great for the price and location - Shell station, restaurants all nearby - within walking distance. Beautiful courtyard and only 30 steps to the beach - although you can't swim b/c the tide's too rough - but great for sunrise!! Didn't get a chance to use the pool. Was able to stash my luggage for the day after checking out.

everything was fine: the location, pool, cleaness, sea perfect and the price worth it.coconut market just few steps ahead very convenient for diner. kapa town close also and b nice for breakfast.

Hotel is right on the beach. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Staff is excellent and caring. Hotel was to be converted to timeshares when new owner went BK, so maintenance has suffered which is why the daily rates are so low. AND.. we have already booked it for a future visit.

If your in Kauai, you don't come to hang out in your room. The hotel is a little old, but the location more than makes up for it. You have to check out Trees Lounge, right next door. They have great food and live music.

Very reasonable rates. Rooms clean. Older hotel. For the price, excellent place to be able to sleep in before you go off to explore Kauai. Very close access to the ocean.

The office staff were very nice. The room seemed clean. I was happy that I brought ear plugs so I could get to sleep before the noise died down, and I did make sure to keep my door locked, but I do that everywhere anyway. I did feel safe walking the grounds in ye early evening. Nice enough neighborhood, and right on the water. This is obviously a budget hotel.
