This was by far the nicest hotel in Hilo. There is much potential to make this an outstanding hotel, but unfortunately it is not. Staff was great. They were very helpful and personable. The floors and rooms have no carpets. My room looked like a dorm room. I have traveled extensively in my lifetime, and this was the only hotel that did not have chase  lounges by the pool. Just chairs and some tables. The pool appeared to have a green color. I would not use the pool. The other hotels in the Hilo area appeared to be in very poor shape, compared to this hotel. If you stay in Hilo I would recommend this hotel. Hilo side is very different then Kona side. You are close to the Volcano if you stay on Hilo side. There are only a few good restaurants compared to Kona. The beaches on Kona side are also much nicer.

Hotel does show it age in spots. Room was pretty comfortable. No frills, Nice TV, too bad it wouldn't come in clearly.FREE, Internet hookup was nice and they have ethernet cords if you need one. OK for a couple of nights. Wouldn't do an extended stay there however.

The hotel's outside appearance is rundown and in need of attention. Apparently they are in the state of "fixin up". The rooms are very comfortable and clean. Just a very interesting controdiction....a good value, peasant management, and easy location.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. They gave us Great recommendations on where to eat. Now, we visited three of the hawaiian islands and stayed in 4 hotels on our trip. This was the ONLY place that actually gave us good dining advice. Everyone else didn't want to tell us where the locals eat, only where they advertise. So I'll give them that. The  hotel itself appears as though it's in need of a good renovation. In fact, they appear to be in the middle of fixing some areas of the hotel, but it appears stalled. Although it is on the water, there is no beach. It's too far to walk to downtown Hilo, you need to drive. However, after looking around, there doesn't appear to be much better prospects. And if you visit Volcanoes National Park from Kona, you're looking at a 2 hour drive, at least. So if you're gonna stay in Hilo, I'd probably recommend this.

This hotel has gone through many changes over the years. Currently it's renovated rooms are a sort of modern, utilitarian chic. No carpet(which I prefer) instead the rooms are wall to wall tile, all granite tile bathrooms. Big shower/tub combo large desk with fridge, coffee maker and outlets for power and Internet. The oceanfront room had a beautiful  view and they converted the room next to us into an open common area with tables and chairs. We enjoyed pizza with the kids over looking the ocean and pool. It's not fancy and parts are run down but you can't beat the location or price. Oh, I love the bright art work that greats you when you get off the elevator on your floor and in the rooms.

The Naniloa Volcanoes Hotel in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii has been around for a long time. It was there in the heyday of Hilo tourism. It has undergone very nice modernization in about half of its rooms. They are very clean, very comfortable and most have wonderful views. I have stayed here numerous times over the past 5 years and always enjoy  my stay. If the weather cooperates you have the most spectacular views of both Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea looking out across Hilo Bay! Don't let the outside of the building influence your judgement of the hotel. The climate in Hilo is brutal to exterior paint and metal. The inside of the rooms is great.

The personnel at the service desk were incredibly friendly and helpful. From them, I learned that the property was constructed in 1959, following a tsunami that devastated the previous establishment. The age of the building was abundantly clear, although we saw areas that appeared to be under renovation. Paint was chipping and peeling from spots everywhere  on the property. All rooms were non-smoking, and the rear designated smoking section had a canopied walkway with quaint tiki poles as the support structure. The tiki poles, too, had paint splitting and falling away. Not to be deterred, though, the appearance almost added to the charm of the hotel. The location was very convenient for staying in Hilo, and the essential amenities were present. There was high-speed internet available in the room, and even though I did not have an Ethernet cord, the front desk loaned me one free of charge, so long as I returned it with my hotel keys. The keys were also of note. In an age of electronic key-card access, this particular hotel still utilized metal room keys. This was only a mild concern, as television has made this type of lock appear to be simple to pick. There were no break-ins to our room, so there really was no issue with the retro-style room key. The room itself was spacious and fairly comfortable. However, the air conditioning system almost did not work at all. This was not a serious concern because the hotel was located right next to Hilo Bay and received a steady wind. The fluorescent lighting in the room was not very hospitable, which admittedly bothered my wife more so than me. Despite the previously-mentioned weathered appearance of much of the hotel, there were some contrasting new additions. The TV was a good quality flat screen, and the newer-looking mini refrigerator kept leftovers and bottled water very cool. The bathroom had everything necessary; toiletries, towels, etc. However, the tub was another place where paint was chipping away. My wife and I parto
